Laura's still running.....for a cure

***** A BIG THANK YOU TO BANGS AMBULANCE OF ITHACA FOR SUPPORTING THE LEUKEMIA & LYMPHOMA SOCIETY AND BECOMING A CORPORATE SPONSOR FOR "THE TEAM" !!!!! *****

The summer of 2003 was a time of change for me. When I signed up to raise money for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and train for a marathon, I never could have guessed where that journey would take me. A year later, I continue to participate with the group. I mentored for the spring season and have made a commitment to raise money, mentor and train for another marathon, the Nike 26.2 on October 24th.

Nothing has been as rewarding as knowing that the money I raise makes a real difference in someone's life. I continue to be inspired by people like my honored teammate Lisa DeMars, who was diagnosed with Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia (CML) when she was 48 years old and seemingly in the prime of her life. Fifty years ago, Lisa's prognosis would have been bleak. In fact, in 1949, the cure rates for blood-cancers were as low as 4% - an almost certain death sentence. Now the same diagnosis has a cure rate of over 80%, and Lisa will soon celebrate 5 years of being cancer free! Lisa credits her remission to advancements in technology and research made possible by donors like you! I am also honored to run for friends who are currently undergoing treatment and those that have successfully undergone treatment.

While searching cures for Leukemia & other blood related cancers, researchers have made advancements in treating other cancers as well. Thanks to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, funding necessary for drugs like Gleevec wouldn't have been possible. Gleevec is one of the new courses of treatment for CML.

I have a goal to raise $3500 before October 2004 but I can't do it without you! If you'd like to make a donation on-line, please see my "links" page and click on "Make an on-line donation". You will be directed to a web page that has been set-up by The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society for participants to receive donations over the Internet. Or visit the "donate" link to see how to donate by US mail. Don't forget, your donation is tax deductible.

Please be sure to visit again to see how I'm doing and visit my diary and photos. Don't forget to sign my guestbook too!
